Over the years, IPA has organized several specialized Seminars, Symposia and Workshops. IPA also conducts the following periodic lectures/seminars:

National And International Collaborations

Aims and Objectives of IPA :

  1. To help the advancement, dissemination and application of the knowledge of Physics.

  2. To promote active interaction among all persons, bodies, institutions (private and/or state owned) and industries interested in achieving the advancement, dissemination and application of the knowledge of physics.

  3. To disseminate information in the field of physics by publication of bulletins, reports, newsletters, journals incorporating research and teaching ideas, reviews, new developments, announcements regarding meetings, seminars, etc., and also by arranging special programmes for students or establishing student cadres.

  4. To arrange seminars, lectures, debates, panel discussions, conferences and film shows on current research topics and other topics of national and local interest pertaining to research and teaching in physics.

  5. To undertake and execute all other acts as mentioned in the constitution of IPA.

Memorandum of Association

  1. The name of the organisation (hereinafter called the Association) shall be Indian Physics Association shall be a professional non-profit organisation.

  2. The registered office of the Association shall be in Bombay in the state of Maharashtra.

  3. The aims and objectives of the Association shall be :

a. To help towards the advancement, dissemination and application of the knowledge of physics. b. To promote active interaction among all persons, bodies, institutions (private and /or state owned) and industries interested in achieving the advancement, dissemination and application for the knowledge of physics. c. To disseminate information in the field of physics by publication of bulletins, reports, newsletters, journals incorporating research and teaching ideas, reviews, new developments, announcements regarding meetings, seminars, etc., and employing media of mass communications radio, T.V., etc., and also by arranging special programmes for students or establishing student cadres. d. To arrange seminars, lectures, debates, panel discussions, conferences and film shows on current research topics and other topics of national and local interest pertaining to research and teaching in physics. e. To organise regional chapters in different parts of the country as and when the need arises. f. To secure grants, funds and endowments and administer the same for the furtherance of the above any or all aims and objectives. g. To acquire property such as office premises, auditorium, research laboratories, hostels, etc. h. To frame, adopt and/or sanction rules and regulations whereby the Association may think fit to guide itself or whereto the said Association should conform or have recourse to in the carrying out of its objectives and/or otherwise and from time to time vary, alter or confirm one or other of such rules and regulations. i. To undertake and execute all other acts which shall promote all or any of the aims and objectives of the Association. And it is hereby declared that in the event of an ambiguity in the interpretation of this clause, the clause shall be construed in such a way as to widen and not to restrict the powers of the Association.

Definition :

For the purpose of interpretation, the following words and expressions shall have the meaning hereinafter stated unless it shall be inconsistent with the relevant context.

  1. Physics means physics and other related fields of study.

  2. Association means the Indian Physics Association.

  3. Office means the registered office of the Association

  4. Member means a member with voting right, unless specified otherwise.

  5. Chapter means a duly constituted chapter of the Association.

  6. Committee means the Executive Committee.

  7. Month means the Gregorian calendar month.

  8. Year means the academic year beginning June 1 and ending on May 31.

  9. Term means a two year period from June 1 of the year in which elections are held, ending May 31 of the second succeeding year.

  10. A word implying only the singular number includes the plural.

  11. Annual subscription means subscription for one academic year.

R D Birla Award in Physics :

The R D Birla Award in Physics was instituted by Birla group in the year 1980, in the memory of late Shri Rameshwar Dasji Birla.

The R D Birla award is given biennially by Indian Physics Association to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Physics. The selection of the awardee is made by a committee constituted by the executive committee of IPA. The recipient of this award should be an Indian citizen working / worked in India.

The R D Birla Award consists of a Citation, a Medal, and a cash amount of Rs.50,000/-.

Shri Murli M. Chugani Memorial Award for Excellence in Applied Physics :

Shri Murli M. Chugani Memorial Award was instituted in the year 1998 by the Chugani family in the memory of late, Shri M. M. Chugani.

The M. M. Chugani Award is given biennially by Indian Physics Association to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions in Applied Physics, e.g., Engineering Physics, Aeronautics, Physics of Ballistic Missiles, Physics of Satellites, Bio-Physics, Reactor Physics, Computers and associated technologies etc. The selection of the awardee is made by a committee constituted by the executive committee of IPA. The recipient of this award should be, an Indian, working in India and affiliated to an Indian Institution. The M M Chugani Award consists of a Citation, a Medal, and a cash amount of Rs.1,00,000/-.

About Shri Murli M. Chugani :

Shri Murli M Chugani industrialist and philanthropist, who founded the company, Hindustan Fashions Ltd., and was its Managing Director till his death on 16th July 1991.The company won many laurels in export performances and he was an important member of the Garment Exporting fraternity.

Shri Chugani was one of the rare Indian industrialists, who although did not have any great understanding of Science and Technology, but had the abiding conviction that sustained efforts in research and development was essential for the progress of the nation.

Physics Olympiad Awards P. K. Iyengar Memorial Award for Excellence in Experimental Physics:

P. K. Iyengar Memorial Award is instituted in the year 2012 by the Iyengar family in the memory of late, Dr. P. K. Iyengar. Dr. P. K. Iyengar Award is given biennially by Indian Physics Association to a scientist who has made outstanding contributions in any area of experimental physics – either in terms of innovative experimental techniques or innovative instrumentation. The selection of the awardee is made by a committee constituted by the executive committee of IPA. The recipient of this award should be, an Indian, working in India and affiliated to an Indian institution. Dr. P. K. Iyengar Award consists of a Citation and a cash amount of Rs. 1,00,000/-.

About Dr. P. K. Iyengar:

Dr. P. K. Iyengar, who was one of India’s most eminent physicists. He built up an internationally respected group in neutron scattering. He led the groups that built PURNIMA, one of the first plutonium reactors, and successfully conducted the Pokran-I test. As Director of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre and Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, he fostered the development of new technologies in the country, and the maintenance of a strong indigenous nuclear programme. His research career was characterized by a strong belief in the experimental method, driven by innovation and excellence, and his life by a deep belief in self-reliance.

C. L. Bhat Memorial Astronomy Olympiad Awards

Physics Olympiad Awards N. S. Satya Murthy Memorial Award in Physics for Young Scientists :

The N S Satya Murthy Memorial Award in Physics was instituted in the memory of late, Dr. N. S. Sathya Murthy in the year 1992, by his colleagues at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai.

The N S Satya Murthy Award is given by Indian Physics Association to a scientist below the age of 40 years, in recognition of outstanding contributions to the growth of Physics in India by way of research, applications and other activities. The selection of the awardee is made by a committee constituted by the executive committee of IPA. The recipient of this award should be, an Indian, affiliated to an Indian institution and should have carried out a major part of the reported work within India. The N S Satya Murthy Award consists of a Citation and a cash amount of Rs.20,000/-.

Prof. C. V. K. Baba Award for the Best Thesis Presentation in Nuclear Physics :

Since the year 2007, the IPA Award for Best Thesis Presentation in Nuclear Physics has been renamed as ‘Prof. C. V. K. Baba Award for the Best Thesis Presentation in Nuclear Physics’. The award is given in honour of late Prof. C V K Baba, a distinguished Nuclear Physicist of the country, to perpetuate his memory. The award is administered by IPA and is supported by an endowment created from donations by the erstwhile colleagues and students of Prof. C V K Baba. The award is given annually to Indian students who have either submitted their thesis or awarded the Ph.D. degree within the calendar year before the annual DAE Nuclear Physics Symposium. The selection of the awardee is made by a panel of judges constituted by the Symposium Organizing Committee.

The award consists of a Citation and a cash amount of Rs. 3,000/-.

C L Bhat Memorial Award for the Best Student at the Indian Astronomy Olympiad Camp :

The CL Bhat Memorial Award for the Best Student at the Indian Astronomy Award Camp is given at both Junior and Senior levels each year, at the Indian Astronomy Olympiad Camp. The CL Bhat Memorial Award for the Best Student at the Indian Astronomy Award Camp is given at both Junior and Senior levels each year, at the Indian Astronomy Olympiad Camp. The award is supported by an endowment received from Professor A. W. Wolfendale, FRS, from the University of Durham, UK. The donation was made by Prof. Wolfendale to honour the memory of Dr. C. L. Bhat.

The award to each student (junior and senior) consists of a Certificate and a cash amount of Rs. 1,500/-.

About Dr. C. L. Bhat :

Dr. C. L. Bhat was a distinguished physicist at the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre’s Nuclear Physics Laboratory at Srinagar and Mumbai. He was the head of the Laboratory in Mumbai and he inspired his group to create several major research facilities of high energy cosmic rays at Gurushikhar. Dr. Bhat was also a General Secretary of IPA and is his tenure is remembered as one of the most active periods of the association. Dr. Bhat was an extra ordinary scientist, teacher and person who created and inspired a whole series of activities in Astronomy and Astronomy Education.

Indian Physics Association Award at the International physics Olympiad Camp :

Indian Physics Association gives two awards at the International physics Olympiad Camp. The awards are given for: (a)Best Solution to a Challenging Problem (b)Best Performance in Experimental programme

Each award carries a Certificate and Rs. 3,000/- in the form of books and cash.
